Designing for Discovery: Innovation Inside the Lab

Regeneron is a leading biotechnology company developing life-changing medicines for serious diseases. Founded by physician-scientists, it translates science into innovative treatments for eye diseases, cancer, neurological conditions, and more—many discovered in its own labs.

What is the Project About?

Designing mobile and desktop experiences for scientists developing genetically engineered animals for research. While it may sound unsettling, this work is essential for advancing medicine and creating new treatments. My team and I designed a seamless end-to-end experience, from planning genetic modifications in a desktop environment to bringing them to life in the lab.

Where Science Meets Design: The Process Unveiled

As a designer, I was responsible for the full product development cycle, starting with research, the most crucial phase. Understanding scientists' needs was essential, so we conducted user interviews, lab shadowing, and focus groups to gather key insights. Our process followed a structured approach:

🧪 Test – Validating designs with users through prototypes and usability studies.

🎨 Design – Translating insights into intuitive desktop and mobile experiences.

💻 Develop – Collaborating with engineers to bring the designs to lif

Imagine a breakthrough is needed—a new drug to combat disease. Where does it all begin? Right here, at the intersection of science and design. My role was to connect the dots, understanding how scientists and lab technicians work, communicate, and innovate. Inside the lab, researchers operate in high-security environments, fully covered in protective suits. This means every tool, including our digital solutions, must be designed for seamless interaction—even when precision is compromised by layers of safety gear. The process is both scientific and strategic: 🔬 Scientists brainstorm and experiment with new genetic combinations. 💊 These modifications help develop and test new treatments. 🖥️ Our system calculates, evaluates, and recommends which genetic traits to combine—ultimately creating a new test subject for drug development.

It may sound like science fiction, but this is the reality of biotechnology. Designing for it meant building digital experiences that bridge science and technology, making innovation not just possible, but efficient.
